Islam and wisdom: Imam Ali (as), Wisdoms on wisdom

Wisdom is a garden for the intelligent and a promenade for the noble.

Wisdom does not settle in the heart of a hypocrite except that it departs from it [soon after].

Wisdom is the lost property of every believer, so take it even if it be from the mouths of hypocrites.

Wisdom is a tree that grows in the heart and bears [its] fruit on the tongue.

Fill your heart with wisdom and don the attire of tranquility for these two are the ornaments of the virtuous.

The beginning of wisdom is abandoning [worldly] pleasures and its end is loathing the transitory.

The greatest wisdom is for the human being to know himself and to remain withing his limits.

Wisdom guides [one] to the right.

Wisdom is protection.

Wisdoms are the gardes of the noble ones.

When you get lost from the wisdom of allah then stand with His power, for indeed [even] if you do not get of His wisdom that which can heal you, you will not lose His power that which will suffice you.

Through wisdom, the veil of knowledge is removed.

The fruit of wisdom is success.

The fruit of wisdom is disdain for the world and infatuation with the Eternal Paradise.

The beauty of wisdom is kindness and good amicability.

The boundary of wisdom is turning away from the perishing abode [of this world] and being infatuated with the Eternal Abode [of the Hereafter].

The wisdom of a lowly person elevates him and the ignorance of a respectable person degrades him.

Take wisdom from wherever it may be, for verily wisdom is the lost property of every believer.

Take wisdom from the one who brings it to you, and look at what he has said and do not look at who said it.

The embellishment of wisdom is being uninterested in the pleasures of this world.

The lost possession of an intelligent person is wisdom, so he is more entitled to it wherever it may be.

The lost possession of a sage is wisdom, so he seeks it out wherever it may be.

Espouse wisdom, for indeed it is an exquisite ornament.

The prize of the sagacious is learning wisdom.

Sometimes words of wisdom may be uttered by one who is not wise.

Wisdom has been paired with protection [from sins].

Everything leads to weariness except novel wisdom.

How can one be patient in disassociating from the enemies [of his felicity] when he is not aided by wisdom?

Every time wisdom grows stronger, lust grows weaker.

Acquiring wisdom is [a means of] beautifying speech and employing kindness.

One who enjoys the insights of wisdom is not bereft of delight.

One who attaches himself to wisdom has ennobled himself.

One who is known for [his] wisdom is looked at with reverence.

One whose wisdom becomes established understands the lessons [that can be learnt from the past].


From the treasures of the unseen comes forth wisdom.

It is part of wisdom to obey the one who is above you, to respect those who are at your level and to be fair to those who are below you.

It is [from the dictates of] wisdom that you should not dispute with the one who is above you; you should not humiliate the one who is below you; you should not pursure that which is not in your ability; you should not let your tongue go against [what is in your heart], nor let your words go against your deeds; you should not speek about that which you have no knowledge of; and you should not leave the matter when it comes in front ofyou and seek it when it has passed.

Gathering s of wisdom are the plantations of the praisworthy.

Lustful desire and wisdom do not go together.

Wisdom does not reside in a heart [that is filled] with lust.

There is no wisdom except with safeguarding [from sin.
