Imam Ali. Imam Ali said:
The freeman is free even if hardship befalls him
Liberty is free of malice and deception
Sometimes the free man may be treated unjustly
The free man will never become enslaved until distress is removed from him
There is no reward for the free except honour [and respect]
“Those, who do not like to co-operate with me, are free as long as they do not excite sedition against people.'' He believed that a human being was free and independent in thinking, deciding and in practicing.

Do not be a slave to others while Allah, the Glorified, has made you free, for that which is good is never achieved except by overcoming evil, and ease is never acquired except through difficulty.

He wrote to one of his officers saying: “Do not say to the people that you are their master or a man of authority and that they have to obey you. This will spoil your heart and weaken your faith in religion and furthermore it creates anarchy in the state.”
